Tris and the rest of the initiates are stunned about the occurrence that happened with Edward, they seem unsettled even though many already suspect who was that stabbed him in the eye. Tris is the one who volunteered to clean up the blood and even though Christina briefly helped no ones assisted her. She then sees dauntless born initiates and Uriah offers her to go to a ritual, tris later finds out that they have to slide of the 100 floor of a building. She is the first initiate to slide and is overwhelmed by the adrenaline. After her adventure she returns to the dauntless headquarters where she sees her other transfer friends, where it is obvious that they are jealous that they were not invited to go as well. The next chapter is the beginning of stage 2 of initiation. It I soon discovered that she is to be put under, and will be watched as she encounters yet another simulation. She is scared but has no choice, as the simulation begins she is attacked by a pack of crows, that bite scratch and pick at her with force. She cries and screams in fear, like any rational person. But Tris manages to get out of the simulation by calming herself and repeating to herself that it wasn't real. Although it seemed as if she was being attacked for a longer time, she was only under for 3 minutes and Four informs her that she was three times faster than the others. Four and Tris discuss the dauntless lifestyle for a while, and it becomes clear that the instructor/initiate relationship is more than it seems.
Tris later returns to the dormitory only to find peter reading an article about her family, and how she and her brother Caleb abandoned their old faction. Apparently Molly had taken her revenge and spoke badly of the relationship tris had with her father. Tris is about to attack defending her family and her old faction but Christina Al and Will stop her and instead take her to get another tattoo. Christina convinced tris to get the tattoo of the dauntless sign, a circle with fire (which is the cover art of the book). They then encounter a drunk Four who frantically talks to tris, about her tattoo and her good looks which leaves her friends questioning his actions. The next day they continue simulations this time she is in a box that is quickly covering her with water. She is in the edge of drowning when the glass breaks and she is free. Apart from her attempts of breaking the glass herself, she mentally broke it something that Four noticed. Four accuses Tris of being careless, and that he knows she is Divergent. He says that he has seen it happened before and that if she could not control it she would not be safe. Tris has no idea how Four knows and with all the confusion she goes to talk with Tori. Tori later explains how her brother was also divergent and that after her was discovered because he too could control the simulations he was killed. As stage 2 continue Tris's simulations become more haunting, more involving her parents, something that she is grateful for, seeing them the only way she can. As she enters the dormitory the Eric is preparing the list of names according to their rank, Tris was placed as number one something that has every one like Peter and even her friends furious about. Tris feels slightly betrayed, and is encountered yet again by Uriah and other Dauntless born. They head to the gun range where they fool around with plastic guns. Later that night Tris hears voices in the hallway that talk about eliminating Divergent rebels where she finds out Eric was appointed his position to find Divergent's amongst the faction. Tris then is later attacked by Eric, Drew, and to her surprise Al. After being beaten, and almost killed she is saved by Four whom carries her away to safety.
