"I remember Caleb telling her that it would only take a month to mend, because it was a hairline fracture. I thought he was reassuring her, because that's what selfless people do, but now I wonder if he was repeating something he had studied; if all his Abnegation tendencies were just Erudite traits in disguise." Chapter 10 pg.114
- This quote for me just emphasizes how long Caleb has been "Erudite". He has always known were his place in this world was, he just always concealed it as a selfless act.
"But Christina just passes me a muffin and crouches in front of me to tie my shoes. Gratitude surges in my chest, warm and a little like an ache. Maybe there is some Abnegation in everyone, even if they don't know it." Chapter 11 pg.119
- I took this quote as a slight comment of how everyone has a little bit of each fraction inside them, even though they choose not to recognize it. Tris sees the Abnegation action in her friend Christina.
"The Dauntless guards close the gate and lock it behind them. The lock is on the outside. I bite my lip. Why would they lock the gate from the outside and not the inside? It almost seems like they they want to keep something out; they want to keep us in" Chapter 11 pg.128
- This returns to my previous suspicions, who are they guarding the city from? Or could it be that they are protecting them from the dangers within? Maybe like a Divergent.
"I have realized that part of being Dauntless is bring willing to make things more difficult for yourself in order to be self-sufficient. There's nothing especially brave about wandering dark streets with no flashlight, but we are not supposed to need help, even from light. We are supposed to be capable of anything." Chapter 12 pg.138
- The Dauntless always seem to need to prove themselves. I take it is if they are not sure of their own abilities and are always trying to expand it.
"Standing alone at the railing is Four. Though he's not an initiative anymore, most of the Dauntless use this day to come together with their families. Either his family doesn't like to come together, or he wasn't originally Dauntless. Which faction could he have come from?" Chapter 15 pg. 180
- I took this as a clue, he must be hiding from someone. And the fact that his family did not come to see him surely means that they hold resentment for his trading factions.
She tilts her head. "You look familiar for some reason, Four."
"I can't imagine why," he replies, his voice suddenly cold. "I don't make a habit of associating with the Abnegation." Chapter 15 pg.182
- Even though Tris later finds out that her mother was Dauntless born, I don't believe that she recognized Four from her prior life. Instead I think that Four used to be Abnegation, and that's why he tries to avoid them. I firmly believe that he was Marcus's son who abandoned him.
She sounds gentle, but her hand squeezes my arm so hard I almost cry out from the pain ad she dragged me away. She walks with me, fast, toward the dinning hall. Just before she rehashes it, though, she takes a sharp left turn and walks down one of the dark hallways I haven't explored yet.
"Mom," I say. "Mom, how do you know where you're going?" Chapter 15 pg.185
- I kind of already figured that her mom was Dauntless. I mean she smiled at Tris after the choosing ceremony as if being proud of her daughters choice. What I'm curious to know,is how her mom knew already that Tris was Divergent, could she herself be one as we'll?
"Maybe Dauntless was formed with good intentions, with the right ideas and the right goals. But it has traded far form them. And the same is true of Erudite, I realize. A long time ago Erudite pursued knowledge and ingenuity for the sake of doing good. Now they pursue knowledge and ingenuity with greedy hearts. I wonder if other factions suffer from the same problem." Chapter 16 pg.206
- I liked this quote because it gave us, the readers, a clue as to how this dystopia was getting worst. Something in their system is failing and it's been happening for years.
"I believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another.
It was a beautiful thought." Chapter 16 pg.207
- Reassuring the readers that not everything is what it seems. There is more behind to the forming, or beginning, of the factions.
