![]() The veldt is a very dark story with a very modern theme. In the story the Hadley family was a very pampered and spoiled family whose house did everything for them. In a way this family dose reflect the modern family, with all the new technology that assists us now in our daily lives it will be no surprise that in the near future there will be houses that cleans itself. Not only that, but according to the story by how the Hadley's have been living, the children Peter and Wendy have become fully dependent on the virtual nursery. This can also be compared to a lot of unfortunate behaviors parents do in this day of age, we can relate this by interpreting how busy parents have no time for their children so instead they hire a nanny. Something that the virtual room was, their nanny so when the father decides to take it away it was only logical that the children would have that reaction. In my opinion the only true villain is the technology. And not because the lions essentially killed the parents but because of the few human interactions it allowed the children to have. In no way can you blame the parents, because in all honesty they truly did think they were doing it for the good of their children. Peter and Wendy were brought up that way, they new no other life style so when their only family (the house) was threatened to being "killed" they thought up of the only way of saving it, that was to the parents disgrace their deaths. There is no true evil in this story because every character and piece of technology played its part with the tragic ending. The parents were too caught up in the pride and money, the children were beyond spoiled and pampered accustomed to getting what they want (which they eventually did) and technology for replacing human activities. It is a horrible thing to think that the children wanted their parents dead, since the beginning were they claimed to have heard "familiar voices", until they end did the readers understand the significance of this odd occurrence. "And suddenly they realized why those other screams had sounded familiar" this only shows how far the children had gone, because of the lack of parental guidance and discipline they've never had.

I appreciated how you compared not only one but two problems from the short story that roam around in the present day. I agree with you that the parents spoiled their children so much that they were incapable of coping with the shutdown of the house. To them the house had become their "guardian" and when it was about to be taken down, they felt like it was the death of their parent. Since the house did everything that the kids needed, it became their motherly figure. It tied their shoes and gave them all the necessities that a mother would usually provide. Overall, your view were right on the mark.

I completely agree with you in the sense that the villain was technology in the story, because in a way it helped to kill Wendy and Peter’s parents. But I do feel that in a way the parents did kind of have a fault by not disciplining their children the way that they could have. You have a point when you say the parents were too caught up with the pride and money. When it came in the end and they realized the wrong that was occurring it was too late already. I do agree with what you have to say about “The Veldt” it was interesting.

I really enjoyed your blog post. You make a good point about how "The Veldt" reflects whats happening in our culture currently. The nursery was just like a nanny for Wendy and Peter; two children who weren't given the necessary guidance from their parents. I also found it clever how you said that technology was the enemy. You looked past the users of it and went straight to the source. Good job!
